Nestled beneath the mature oak canopy of Laurel Canyon, Stanley Hills Residence was originally designed in 1979 by architect Barry Gittelson for Stan Madson of the influential Bodhi Tree Bookstore. Defined by its central atrium, interconnected split-level spaces, and extensive handcrafted woodwork, the home embodies a thoughtful relationship between architecture, natural light, and its surrounding landscape. From the outset, the project presented an opportunity not to reinvent the house, but to build upon the qualities that had made it so enduring.

Rather than introducing a new architectural language, the work sought continuity.

Venn Studio led a multi-year rehabilitation focused on carefully modernizing the property while preserving the warmth, craftsmanship, and spatial character established by the original design. Each intervention was guided by the existing home, allowing new elements to feel as though they had always belonged.

The project scope involved the thoughtful transformation of the primary residence and guest house, guided by a broader vision for the property's indoor and outdoor living environments. Within the main house, strategic design interventions improved functionality and flow, including an expanded kitchen and pantry, a new guest bathroom, expanding the primary bathroom, a dedicated laundry room, and custom millwork integrated throughout the entry, living spaces, and study.

Drawing inspiration from the home's original craftsmanship and rich wood detailing, the design balances modern needs with a deep respect for the existing architecture, creating spaces that feel both timeless and highly livable.

Throughout the residence, spaces continue to unfold around the soaring atrium and are woven together by natural light, framed views, and a strong connection to the surrounding trees. The project reflects a belief that thoughtful rehabilitation can extend the life of an already remarkable home. Rather than redefining Stanley Hills Residence, the work sought to strengthen the qualities that had always made it unique, allowing a carefully crafted piece of Laurel Canyon architecture to continue into its next chapter.
