The Lafayette Residence reimagines a 1920s Craftsman bungalow through a full remodel and two-story addition, paired with a new ADU tucked into the rear garden. From the beginning, the goal was clear: preserve the home’s familiar charm while shaping it for modern life. Many of the original walls were kept, honoring the home’s past while creating efficiency in construction.

When we first met with Nora and Andrew, they imagined a home made for gathering and built for function. They wanted a comfortable space that could host more than just a few friends, one that opened seamlessly to the backyard. The new addition makes that possible, expanding the living areas into a generous, light-filled space that connects directly to the outdoors.

The Lafayette Residence balances history and reinvention, a home that feels both grounded and new. Historic details such as the front entry archway and applied trim were not only preserved but reinterpreted. Matching archways now define the mudroom and entry, bringing a quiet continuity between old and new. The central staircase anchors the plan within a double-height kitchen, while thoughtful updates such as added storage, a dedicated mudroom, and a well-organized ADU replace the functions of a traditional garage.

Built for how the family lives today while still carrying traces of what came before.

Upstairs, a small loft just off the landing offers a place to pause. It opens to a balcony that frames a beautiful view of the Culver City hills and is lined with bookshelves and a custom built-in sofa. Though compact, it is layered with detail and warmth, designed as a creative retreat for both inspiration and relaxation.

Throughout the home, everyday materials are combined in unexpected ways, brought together through earthy bold tones and tactile finishes that give each space its own personality. The first-floor layout supports the broader theme of aging in place, while the gardens invite a life that extends outdoors.
